Kjello’s images open intriguing windows into curious little worlds. With a dreamlike quality, he takes us on a playful adventure infused with gentle, subtle humour. Direct exposition is avoided in favour of glimpses of possible interpretations. Certain themes prevail, for instance the urban landscapes and architecture, strongly influenced by the many years he lived and worked in New York City.

In his works, Kjello takes spectators on playful adventures to a parallel universe infused with gentle, subtle humour. It’s a world somewhere between dream and reality. Compositions are knowingly cropped, recalling amateur snapshots. We become drawn to little obscured details, which float in a sea of semi- abstract shapes. A ship, a strange machine, a repeated sequence of pin-striped men strolling around impossible architecture. With a nod to David Hockney, he styles a hybrid world of urban settings, surreal modernist buildings and eccentric people. The working approachis direct and energetic. Colour harmony is paramount - the process involves spontaneous improvisations - and Kjello enjoys the battle. With a background in print making and graphic design, the artist’s more recent works favour subtle textures and colours on unprimed canvas, telling loose narratives which invite the viewer to make his own interpretation. Literature and films often work as a trigger for Kjello’s creative process. They provide the backdrop and mood for many of his pieces. His often fragmented human figures exist outside the frame of time and space, like voyagers lost in a warp reality, recalling Borges in the puzzles, and his artistic sensitivity can be traced back to the introspective and existential French New Wave films of the 60’s. In more recent works, the ghost of Giorgio Morandi can be detected in the dusty colour palette and the search for spacial relationships. The perception of the reality is a personal one. The obscure nature of the narratives of Kjello’s work reminds one of a meditative journey among cloudy memories. They conspire to inspire.
